Murray McNabb - also known as ‘Starwars’ by friends and colleagues - for obvious reasons when listening to his music.
HARD JAZZ was recorded at the Auckland Domain Band Rotunda as part of the Music in Parks series run by Auckland City in 2012.
The album features some fabulous playing and improvisation - not the least from Drummer Frank Gibson Jr who first met Murray at Mt Albert Grammar School in the 1960s and they’ve been buddies and collaborators ever since.
Neil Hannan and Murray McNabb worked a lot together in the 70s, 80s & 90s in various groups including Mainstreet resident band Strange Brew. Also Beaver & The Flyers , Hard Jazz & The Murray McNabb Group.
There are elements of the groups’ influences in the music… Bitches Brew (Miles Davis) and Weather Report spring to mind.
